Thoughts on art and life
(Work created in The Art Life: Building Your Visual Vocabulary Workshop)
"I don't think about art when I am working. I think about life." -Frida Kahlo
Warm greetings from Los Angeles,
I spend a lot of time thinking about life and the world around us.
I’ve always believed that artists are here to show us what’s possible, to encourage us to dream bigger, to show us alternatives.
We need art and creative people more than ever in the world.
Yet, I’m hearing from many of my artist friends that they’re stuck and in a place of deep despair. I understand this and yet, I’m going to encourage you to think about some things:
What does art bring you?
What do you want from the act of making art?
What do you want your art to do for others?
Can you use your art to encourage, brainstorm, or just to create a safe space for a short time for yourself or those around you?
Can you reach out and create art with someone else? Shared company can help offer a reprieve as well as it’s an excellent way to spend an afternoon.
Can you create in short bursts? 5, 15, 30 minutes a day adds up over time.
I’ve been looking to artists of the past to see how they’ve not only survived but lived and worked throughout periods of despair. It’s helpful to know that we are not alone.
“What do you think an artist is? An imbecile who only has eyes if he’s a painter, ears if he’s a musician, or a lyre in every chamber of his heart if he’s a poet – or even, if he’s a boxer, only some muscles? Quite the contrary, he is at the same time a political being constantly alert to the horrifying, passionate or pleasing events in the world, shaping himself completely in their image. How is it possible to be uninterested in other men and by virtue of what cold nonchalance can you detach yourself from the life that they supply so copiously? No, painting is not made to decorate apartments. It’s an offensive and defensive weapon against the enemy.” -Pablo Picasso
